Day 26: Wyoming's Big Ed Delahanty hits 3-run walkoff homer, stuns Bernstein Bears



E Street's Bill Dickey hit a 9th inning homer that stunned Vermont, manager Tim Carr with some bitter words for the press

The New Zealand Kiwis edged the Verona Ridge Roadrunners at Roadrunner Park by
the score of 6 to 5.

New Zealand went ahead for good in the top of the 7th inning scoring one
runner. New Zealand managed 9 hits in their victory.

Eddie Plank(4-1) allowed 5 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Goose
Gossage was credited with his 8th save. Roger Clemens(0-2) was the losing
pitcher. Despite losing, he struckout 12 New Zealand batters in 8 and 2/3
innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Plank said,
'this was one of those times.'

Rube Waddell went the distance and Jim Rice jacked one out of the ballyard and
had 3 RBI as the General Motors Corporate Jets defeated the Walkerville Texas
Rangers by a score of 6 to 4 at Chuck Norris Stadium.

General Motors came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 8th
inning scoring 3 runs using 2 hits. Alex Rodriguez got things rolling when
he cracked a solo homerun (his 4th of the season). Hank Greenberg stepped up
next and he drew a walk. Jim Thome was next to the plate, but was promptly
struck out. Rice was up next and he popped a two-run clout over the fence
(his 3rd of the season). This was the kind of game that many fans love as
the lead changed hands 5 times.

The winning pitcher was Waddell(2-3) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Tim
Keefe(1-3) took the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 9 innings.

With this win, General Motors has a 7-15 record. They have been 3-7 lately.
Walkerville has a record of 10-8 after the loss.

Tommy John allowed Jake the Drifter to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game at Triops Stadium as the Wyoming Triops pulled off a dramatic comeback
beating the Bernstein Bears by the count of 4 to 3.

Wyoming erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Charlie
Gehringer keyed the rally when he banged out a single. Rod Carew stepped
into the batter's box and he laced a base-hit. Ed Delahanty then lofted a
three-run 'big-fly' (his 5th of the season) giving Wyoming the victory as
36,700 happy fans celebrated wildly. Wyoming banged out 9 hits on the
afternoon.

The win went to John(3-0) who allowed 3 runs in the game. Dennis
Eckersley(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. 'What a win!', John said.
'These are the kind of games that stand out in your mind at the end of a
season.'

Nap Lajoie had 2 base hits as the E Street Outlaw Petes won in dramatic
fashion over the Vermont Saps by a score of 6 to 4 at Vermont Field.

E Street won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 4
runners on 1 hit. The big moment was provided by Bill Dickey who deflated
the spirits of the home town crowd when he rifled a three-run blast (his 1st
of the season). Despite losing, Vermont out-hit E Street 10 to 7.

Tom Seaver(4-3) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Joe
McGinnity earned his 1st save. Francisco Rodriguez(0-1) ended up with the
loss in relief.

Tim Carr was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'
